In modern times, we have concluded (strangely) that all our productive efforts and triumphs can be completely attributed to one’s morning routine. We often see videos of the wealthy boasting that their routine helps them pioneer their vast business empire. Sounds pretty intriguing, right?
However, the truth is that there is no secret sauce. Not entirely anyway. The fact of the matter is that your morning routine doesn’t have to be filled with smoothie bowls and staring at yourself in the mirror for some virtuous self-empowering BS. No, the importance of a morning routine isn’t layered in what actions you necessarily take but in what state your mind is in. Yes, you can perform certain activities to push yourself into a specific state of mind but what if those activities were jobs that you need to do anyway?
So, Why Do So Many Push the Idea of a “Morning Routine”
Simply put, a morning routine is whatever actions you take in the morning that often repeat. That’s all a morning routine is. If I scratch my balls and smoke a cig every single morning then voila, I have a morning routine. Now, understanding that is crucial, since we all more or less have a morning routine you can see why these videos/narratives of “Successful” morning routines get pushed around the internet. People are dying to see what wealthy/successful people do day-to-day in order to try and copy certain aspects to pursue success themselves.
This is simply a terrible thing to do. Yes, copying the actions of those who are successful can be beneficial, in the same way that copying a footballer’s techniques can be beneficial. However, just like copying the footballer, those actions taken might not work for you. See, we all have different triggers/motivators to get us into a productive mental state. For some, this might be meditating after downing a copious amount of coffee, whereas for others this might be reading a self-help book for 30 minutes.
You need to understand truly what helps you get into that “productive mindset” in order to be as productive as possible.
Can You Be In That Productive Mindset Constantly?
The truth is no, you cannot. There will be times when your mind will resist the productive mindset, and all you will want to do is to chill in bed, scrolling Instagram reels while you fry your brain into oblivion. It feels good, and quick dopamine is what our body craves since it’s already tasted the sweet nectar of brain rot content. But, there is the secret sauce…
DO IT ANYWAY
You need to crack on and get the jobs done that you know you need to do. Simply relying on a state of mind is only going to hold you back as when you’re struggling you will waste a bunch of time meditating, walking, making smoothie bowls, and all other sorts of time-wasting activities. You need to train your mind to understand you are in control, not your emotional/mental state. No matter what you need to push through and get the jobs done.
You won’t always be happy to work, you won’t always be happy to train, you won’t always be happy after the most productive day of your life. But when you see the results, once you taste success, once you’re able to stand on your own two feet and look down on your creation which was built from nothing but your blood, sweat, and tears, that’s when you’ll be truly happy.
